About the Production
What is the play about?
The play takes place in Vienna, where the Duke mysteriously decides to travel away from the city and leave his deputy, Angelo, in charge, with instructions for Angelo to enforce a set of laws that the Duke himself has long neglected. Angelo proceeds to tear down the city's brothels and arrest citizens for adultery. Isabella, a novice in a convent, learns that her brother has been arrested and pleads for his life, but her encounter with Angelo puts her in an impossible position. Quirky, comedic characters from Vienna's underworld contrast with the near-tragic central conflict. Content warning: This play does deal with sexual coercion.
Is the play appropriate for children?
Because the central conflict in the play addresses a topic that some parents may not feel is appropriate for younger children, we do not recommend this production for audience members under 13. Parents and guardians are usually the best judges of what their own children can handle, and we recommend reading a full summary of the play, such as THIS ONE from the Folger Shakespeare Library.
Who are the actors?
Pigeon Creek’s actors come primarily from West Michigan and have extensive training and experience with performing Shakespeare and other classical plays. This production features actors Chaz Albright, Chaz Bratton, Michael Dodge, Kimi Griggs, Kat Hermes, Scott Lange, Katherine Mayberry, Ashley Normand, Sarah Stark, Scott Wright, and Seraphina Zorn.
